12 Google Business Profile Fixes Most Businesses Miss

Your Google Business Profile decides whether you appear in the map pack. Twelve overlooked fixes — categories, services, reviews, posts — that move local rankings.

The map pack — those three businesses with the map at the top of local searches — wins the majority of calls for "near me" searches. And the map pack is decided almost entirely by your Google Business Profile. Most businesses set theirs up once and never touch it again. Here are the twelve fixes we see missed constantly.

1. Wrong primary category

This is the single biggest lever. Your primary category should be the most specific accurate one: "Immigration consultant," not "Consultant." "Divorce lawyer," not "Law firm." Google lets you add secondary categories — use them — but the primary carries the most weight.

2. Missing secondary categories

Add every service-adjacent category that applies. An immigration practice might add "Visa consultant" or "Legal services" as secondaries. Each one is another set of searches you can appear for.

3. No services listed

The Services section is not decoration. Add each service with a one or two-sentence description containing the words clients actually search. These descriptions feed Google's understanding of your business.

4. A generic business description

"We provide quality services to our valued clients" says nothing. Front-load the facts: what you do, who for, where, and for how long. "Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant in Edmonton helping families with Express Entry, sponsorships, and work permits since 2015."

5. No products or menus where they apply

If Google offers a Products section for your category, use it. It is free shelf space in search results.

6. Missing or wrong hours — including holiday hours

Nothing loses a client faster than driving to a closed office Google said was open. Set special hours for every holiday. Google explicitly rewards complete profiles.

7. Fewer than 50 reviews (or none recent)

Review count and recency are ranking factors. Build a habit: ask every satisfied client, the day you deliver the good news. A short text with the direct review link works best — remove every ounce of friction.

8. Unanswered reviews

Respond to all of them, positive and negative, within 24 hours. For negative reviews: acknowledge, stay professional, take it offline. Future clients read your responses as closely as the reviews.

9. No photos — or only stock photos

Businesses with real photos get dramatically more engagement. Upload your storefront, your team, your work. Add new ones monthly. And yes, rename the files descriptively before uploading — "edmonton-immigration-office.jpg" beats "IMG_4829.jpg."

10. Never posting updates

Google Business posts expire after a while, which means the profile rewards the active. One post a week — a tip, a deadline reminder, a policy change explained, a client milestone (with permission) — keeps you visible and gives searchers a reason to choose you.

11. Q&A section ignored

Anyone can ask questions on your profile — including competitors and confused searchers. Monitor it. Seed it yourself with the five questions you hear most, answered properly. An unanswered "Are you open Saturdays?" sitting for six months is a lost client every week.

12. Attributes left blank

Wheelchair accessible? Women-led? Languages spoken? Appointment required? These attributes appear as filters in search. "French spoken" as an attribute can be the entire reason a francophone client picks you over the practice next door.

The maintenance habit

None of this is one-and-done. Put 30 minutes a week on the calendar: one post, review responses, a photo, a Q&A check. Profiles that move get rewarded; profiles that sit still sink. Local SEO is a treadmill, but it is a short, easy one.
