Why Your Business Doesn't Show Up on Google

You search your own business name and… nothing. Or you search what you do — "immigration consultant Calgary" — and you are on page four, which is the same as nothing. Before you spend a dollar on marketing, run through these nine causes. One of them is almost always the culprit.

1. Google doesn't know your site exists

New sites are not indexed automatically or instantly. Check: search site:yourdomain.com on Google. If no pages appear, you are not indexed. Fix it by submitting your sitemap in Google Search Console — a free tool every business should have connected.

2. Your pages say nothing specific

If your homepage headline is "Welcome to our website" and your services page lists "a full range of solutions," Google has no idea what you do. Every page needs to state its topic plainly: in the title tag, the H1, and the first paragraph. Write for a stranger, not for your industry peers.

3. One page is trying to rank for everything

A single "Services" page cannot rank for Express Entry, spousal sponsorship, work permits, and study permits in three cities. Each distinct thing clients search for deserves its own page. This is the most common structural mistake on small business sites.

4. Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unverified

For any local search, the map pack outranks everything — and you cannot appear in it with an unverified or skeletal profile. No category, no services, no reviews, no photos: no map pack. (We listed every fix here.)

5. You have almost no reviews

Reviews are not just social proof; they are a ranking input. If competitors have 80 reviews and you have 6, Google reads that as "customers prefer them." The fix is unglamorous: ask every happy client, systematically, forever.

6. Your site is slow or broken on phones

Most local searches happen on mobile. If your site takes six seconds to load or the text requires pinching and zooming, Google demotes you — and the visitors who do arrive leave. Test your own site on your phone, on data, right now. Be honest about what you see.

7. Bigger sites outrank you on generic terms — so stop fighting them there

You will not outrank the government of Canada for "immigration Canada." Stop trying. The winnable searches are specific and local: a service plus a city, a question plus a program name. Ten page-one rankings for specific searches beat one page-four ranking for a generic one.

8. Your business information disagrees with itself

Your website says "Edmonton," Yelp says "Edmonton, AB," and an old directory still lists your previous address from 2019. Search engines cross-check your name, address, and phone number across the web. Inconsistencies erode trust. Audit your listings and fix them — this alone has rescued rankings more than once.

9. You published three blog posts in 2021 and stopped

Google favors sites that demonstrate ongoing expertise. A site frozen in time looks abandoned. You do not need daily content — one genuinely useful post a month, answering a real client question, compounds over a year into a library that ranks, gets cited, and brings consultations.

How to diagnose it yourself in 20 minutes

1. Search site:yourdomain.com — are you indexed?
2. Search your business name — do you own the first result?
3. Search "[your service] [your city]" in an incognito window — where do you appear?
4. Check your Google Business Profile completeness score.
5. Open your site on your phone — how does it feel?
